Built for British Columbia

Richmond metal roofing: a roof that cannot rust.

BC is a coastline, a rainforest, a snow belt and a fire zone, sometimes on the same drive. Here is what an Interlock® aluminum roof does about each.

Salt air

Aluminum cannot rust

There is no iron in aluminum, so there is nothing to rust. It forms its own thin oxide layer, which re-forms if the surface is scratched. That is why it is the metal for oceanfront homes, island cabins and anywhere the wind carries salt.

Wildfire

Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly

Under ASTM E108 a fire classification belongs to an assembly, not a panel. On our roofs Class A is achieved with two layers of GAF VersaShield® over 12 mm (15/32-inch) plywood, and the aluminum itself does not ignite. Ask us to quote the assembly if your home backs onto forest or grassland.

Reflectance

Reflectance, rated colour by colour

Most Alunar® colours are rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC), which publishes each colour's solar reflectance (0.25 to 0.44 when new) and thermal emittance (0.83 to 0.86). Lighter and metallic colours reflect more. The Alunar® finish is warranted for 30 years.

Energy

Colour and summer heat

Lighter colours absorb less summer sun than dark ones. What that saves depends on climate, colour, insulation and attic ventilation, so we don't quote a figure.

Solar

The roof to put solar on

A solar array lasts 25 to 30 years. Put it on an asphalt roof and the panels often have to come off and go back on when the roof wears out underneath them. On an Interlock roof they come off at the end of their own life, not the roof's. Standing Seam takes clamp mounts with no holes drilled; the other profiles use mounting hardware made for metal roofing. At roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre the roof leaves more of the structure's capacity for the array, and your solar installer confirms the framing.

Wind

Locked on four sides

Interlock panels lock to each other on all four sides, with no exposed fastener for a storm to work at. Wind resistance is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) installed to manufacturer specification.

Coastline: Province of British Columbia, Coastal Marine Strategy ↗ gives "more than 26,000 kilometres"; federal mapping gives 25,725 km. Product figures are the manufacturer's: interlockroofing.com ↗

    Why aluminum roofing, for Richmond

Richmond aluminum roofing for sea air, storm wind and island rain.

    Sea level

An island city one metre above the sea

The City of Richmond says it sits at an average of 1 metre above sea level, behind 49 km of dikes that hold back the Salish Sea and the Fraser River. Homes here live with damp sea air. Aluminum contains no iron, so it cannot rust; it forms its own protective oxide layer instead, wherever the house sits on the island.

    Storm wind

Storm winds off the Strait of Georgia

The Strait of Georgia lies along Richmond's west side, and the City's flood planning deals with coastal storm surges: high water from storm winds and waves combined with high tides. The same storms push hard against roofs. Interlock® roofs are warranted for wind to 193 km/h (120 mph), installed to manufacturer specification, with every panel locked to the next.

    Rain

    Drier than Vancouver, still wet

Sitting farther from the mountains, Richmond gets about 30% less rain than neighbouring Vancouver. The Richmond Nature Park station still averages 1,262.4 mm of precipitation a year, falling on 183.8 days (1981–2010 climate normals), and the cooler months are very cloudy. A roof dries slowly under that cloud; aluminum gives moss nothing to grow in.

    Houses

    Richmond's single-detached houses

Apartments are Richmond's most common type of home, but the city also has 24,435 single-detached houses, and its high water table means very few of them have basements. We roof houses with a slope of 3/12 or steeper, replacing asphalt, cedar and tile with interlocking aluminum that weighs roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per m².

    Recycled

    Up to 95% recycled aluminum

And the last tear-off your house is likely to need.

    Straight answers

Aluminum shingles in Richmond: straight answers.

    All of our answers ↗

    Which communities does richmondroofing.ca cover?

All of Richmond: City Centre, Steveston, Broadmoor, Blundell, Seafair, Thompson, Shellmont, West Cambie, East Cambie, Hamilton, Bridgeport, East Richmond, Sea Island, Gilmore and the Fraser Lands. Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster, the Tri-Cities, Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are covered at vancouverroofing.com. Same company, same crews.

Do you install aluminum shingles and metal shingles in Richmond?

Yes, on any roof with a slope of 3/12 or more. Our profiles are Interlock® Slate, Interlock® Cedar Shingle, Interlock® Shake and Interlock® Mediterranean Tile, all interlocking aluminum, plus Interlock® Standing Seam and solid copper. Flat roofs are outside what we install.

Does Richmond's weather suit an aluminum roof?

Richmond has an oceanic climate. Snow is rare: the Richmond Nature Park station averages 34.6 cm a year (1981–2010 climate normals). Rain, cloud, wind and sea air do the damage here instead. Aluminum cannot rust, and Interlock® panels lock on four sides with concealed fasteners, so there are no exposed screws for wind-driven rain to work at.

Does the City of Richmond require a permit to replace a roof?

The City of Richmond's guide for homeowners and builders lists "Roofing repair or replacement" under work for which permits are not required. The same guide says the homeowner is still responsible for meeting the BC Building Code and the Zoning Bylaw. Strata properties need their own approval, so we check your address before the job is booked.

How much does a metal roof cost in Richmond?

Our metal roof cost page gives price ranges by profile from our own BC contracts. They are a rough guide only: structural and other conditions vary from house to house and change the price. An in-home or Zoom roof consultation is required for an accurate price.

What does "Richmond's Best Roof®" mean?

Best Roof® is a registered trademark of I.E.L. Manufacturing Ltd., which owns the Interlock brand, and it is the name the Interlock® roof goes by in Canada. "Richmond's Best Roof®" is that same aluminum roof, installed in Richmond by our own BC crews. It is a brand name; it does not rank anyone.
